STANDSTILL: Launch Post #4

Updated: Sep 26, 2019

Today we’re going to discuss the second theme in STANDSTILL.

Whilst I was writing the novel, I constantly thought, “What would I do if I were in that situation?”

And I hope that's something you consider as well while you're reading STANDSTILL.

I mean, take a minute and think for me: what would you do if the next train you got on was taken hostage by terrorists?

Would you cry? Scream? Try and break out? Hide? Call your loved ones and tell them you loved them? If so, who would you call first? Husband. Wife. Kids. Parents.

What would you do if the terrorists told you that you were all going to die, and that there was no one to save you?

Would you sit there and wait, thinking about all of the things you've done in your life? How little you've accomplished? How much you've accomplished? What you haven't done with your small amount of time on this earth yet?

What if the shoe was on the other foot, and you were told you were responsible for saving every single last individual stuck on board those trains?

Would you stop at nothing to save them? Would you not care? Would you let them suffer because it had nothing to do with you? Or would you sacrifice yourself in the attempt to rescue them all?

These are some of the questions I considered while writing STANDSTILL. Again, it's that saying, isn't it. What if? And again, this book will leave you never seeing anything the same again.

Of course, everyone will have their own answers to these questions. And some of those answers may surprise you. Mine certainly did. But I won't be sharing those with you.

This does, however, raise another question: how can we ever know how we’d react?

We can't.

We can only hypothesise. We can only imagine how we would behave, but when if it came down to it I'm certain everyone would react differently to the way they originally believed they would.

I hope that, if you're reading this before reading the book, you'll read STANDSTILL in a better light that won't negatively impact upon you're reading of the novel.
